Self-confidence is what every woman desires. It is a positive attitude about your skills and abilities. If you are confident you give the strong impression that you know what you represent. However, being confident does not mean not having any weaknesses. If you are self-confident you are aware of your shortcomings and you are able to maintain a positive view of yourself despite that. In fact, if we are disconnected from our weaknesses and not acknowledging them we might fall into a trap of inflated sense of self. Inflated sense of self relies on empty praises and false compliments from other people. Inflated sense of self is like a balloon, which pops easily when confronted with real world demands.
If you know your weaknesses and you are still able to maintain a good relationship with yourself, you are on the best way to maintain true self-confidence. True confidence is inside but it can be seen on the outside. It is like when you wear beautiful underwear. If you want to look elegant you need to feel elegant. Lingerie is the maximum expression of a woman’s femininity. Real beauty begins underneath and radiates outwards.
If you believe in yourself others will too. You do not have to ask for acknowledgement as the real acknowledgement is when others follow in your footsteps. Show your confidence in action, by leading, not by asking for reassurance. Confidence is in what you wear, how you step into the room, whom you look in the eyes. Underwear is a first piece in building that confidence you desire. By wearing elegant lingerie you feel deserving and self-appreciated and that manifests when you walk into the room. Lingerie is not about seducing men, it’s about embracing womanhood. Wear it for yourself.
Lingerie directly touches your skin. It should be well-fitted, smooth and delicate. It is probably the most important piece of your wardrobe. True elegance comes from the inside especially from the things that don’t show.
Confidence is not something you are born with but something that you learn as you go through life. At times our confidence gets knocked down. When you are going through a difficult phase in life, when relationships break or your income suffers you probably feel disheartened. However, we all go through difficult times and that shapes us. The ability to survive and thrive through experience is what builds your self-confidence.
The truth is there is no magic formula to achieve it but it is important to remember a few points. Focus on developing your skills, know where your life is heading and ensure you are portraying what you want others to see. Feeling confident, feminine and sexy starts by wearing underwear you deserve.
Lastly, celebrate the big and small wins. Tap into your self-compassion and stop being tough on yourself. There will always be days when you feel things have not gone the way you wished and your negative thoughts come running. Acknowledge them, appreciate your efforts and treat yourself by wearing something you like. Note small achievements. Whether it is a promotion or you managed to clean your room. If you don’t learn to celebrate small steps, you won't stop to celebrate the important ones. Be kind! Never underestimate the power of good lingerie on a bad day.

The Bold Collection by Habibi London is a collection of statement pieces that represent confidence and class. A person who is confident and willing to take risks needs to have a strong and clear appearance. Such appearance is attained by a use of the right cuts and colours. Black is a colour associated with mystery, strength, authority and sophistication. All other colours are reflections of light, except black. Black is the absence of light. ‘A black belt’ is an expert level in martial arts and ‘black tie’ refers to a formal dress code. However, a black cannot exist without white, which represents simplicity and freshens up the look. The contrast is what makes the outfit elegant and raises it a notch. White refreshes and balances the outfit and gives it clarity. Sophistication is in simplicity and the Bold Collection represents elegance in its simplest form.
Making a fashion statement with a t‑shirt communicates confidence. If you can be confident in a T‑shirt, it means you are confident in your own skin. Met Gala is back in the calendar on the first Monday of May. Last year the Gala took place in September following cancellation but previously this event has always been happening in May. For those who have not heard about the Met Gala it is an exclusive event to fundraise money for Metropolitan Costume Institute. Met Gala collects impressive sums of money every year. Last year the Gala raised a whooping 16 mln dollars.
For those interested in history, the Met Gala was founded in 1948. The event was not always as prestigious as it is nowadays. Diana Vreeland, Vogue editor-in-chief and consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was the first who started inviting celebrities to the event in the early 70s which significantly raised its profile.
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the organizer of the gala, presented a collection of American fashion pieces across history called 'In America: an anthology of fashion'. The theme of this year's Gala was 'Gilded Age' that referred to the late 19th century. The fashion of that era can be described as 'white tie and gilded glamour'. White tie indicates a standard dress code for formal events back in those days. For women the formal dress code was a full-length ball gown with gloves. Women's clothing during that age is often associated with what we now call the bustle which was a voluminous silhouette which created emphasis on women's backsides. Later on, the bustles were replaced with a small cushioned pad that meant to enhance women's hips. The dresses included drapes, laces and a variety of fabrics such as silk, tulle etc.
The Gilded era was an era of luxury and grandeur but only for the rich. It was the time of industrialization, immigration and economic growth. Nonetheless, the Gilded Age was extremely hard on a working class with low pay and hard working conditions.

The idea of Costume Gala is to wear costumes that represent the theme. So, let me jump into our annual Met Gala Costume reviews. It was not easy to select the best costumes not because there were over 200 of them, but it was mostly because there were few significant issues with most of the outfits of the Gala.
First and foremost not everyone seemed to understand the theme 'Gilded era'. Cardi B wore a dress by Versace witj extreme gold ornamentation that reminded me of French Rococo that dated to the early 18th century and that is a century behind the theme. Cardi's gown had no bustle or even hoop so characteristic to the Gilded Age and seemed to me a complete miss.
Secondly, it seemed that many outfits were screaming 'here I am' by simply putting together all the colours and fabrics with no plan which appeared extremely unflattering in most cases. It is true that the Gilded Age used a variety of fabrics but they should be matched with a style and not just according to what you happen to pick out from your wardrobe.
Thirdly, trousers and nipples' covers barely make for an outfit. Have you seen a white wedding-like dress paired with a backward-weared hat one of the Kardashians wore? - talking about 'a miss'.
Well, let's focus on the winners. Some celebrities definitely put more effort into the costume than others and understood the assignment.

Danai Gurira was quite close with her beautiful hooped dress in royal blue. It reminded me of the Victorian era, which coincided with the Gilded Age. Moreover, wealthy Americans travelled to Europe and brought a lot of trends imitating aristocratic dresses of that era. Not my favourite pick but I definitely applaud for being spot on theme. The only problem is what she holds in her hand - is that a mini-broom? Would it not be better to add stylish gloves?
Another celebrity that represented the theme well by replicating the golden age dresses was Billie Eilish. She was reminiscent of the portrait of Madame Paul Person with her bodice dress and fingerless lace gloves. And the ruching around her hips - it is totally on theme. The reason why it is not my favourite dress is the coordination of colours, which was less than ideal - pastels look nice but they would do better with a stronger accent. The lace green gloves were lovely but did not match the green on the dress.
The absolute winner who nailed the theme and looked stunning at the same time was no one else but the co-host of the Gala Blake Lively. She started off the night in a beautiful Versace copper dress which was transformed on the stage into a turquoise dress to mimic the oxidation process of the Statue of Liberty. Her dress was made of tulle and embroidered with crystals and metallic leather. Blake seems to love crystals as she appeared in one of the previous Met Galas in a crystal covered red Versace gown. You can read about the red Versace gown she wore at the Met Gala in 2018 in one of our earlier articles.

This year's dress was also designed by Versace. A copper change into turquoise dress with a train depicting a map that decorated the ceiling of Grand Central Station in Manhattan. This dress is absolutely well thought out and banged on the theme. It is also quite original in how it represented significant pieces of architecture of the Gilded Age. Additionally, the train, when folded, formed the bustle which is in line with the trends from that era. The palette of colours is perfectly matched with jewellery and the crown. Blake has an amazing attention to details. This is my absolute favourite. Once again Blake did not disappoint.

There were a few dresses that were beautiful but not at all matched the theme of the Gilded Age.Sara Sampaio wore a golden glittering gown by Michael Kors. She looked stunning although as far away from the theme as it could be. As I described earlier, 'Gilded' referred to 'Gilded Age', the era of 1890 and 1900 and not 'gilded' as 'covered in a thin layer of gold'. Even though the gold looks great on Sara, that is a huge miss. Her dress looked more like the early 20th century at the times of the end of the Gilded Age. The dress was lovely, although no thought was put into the theme.

Miranda Kerr was closer to the theme with her white hoop gown by Oscar de La Renta. I love the simplicity, although white long gloves would make a great finish for this gown and raise its match to the theme.
Of course these are just a few examples of 'hit and miss' outfits and these ones stood out for me. There were others that matched the theme but we would not be able to cover them all. Nonetheless, I do wonder how so many were a mismatch or not in any way close to the theme. At the end of the day, it is a Costume Gala.
]]>Comfort Anna is a model based in Kenya. She picked up an interest in fashion since early years when she was taken for the shoots by her mother, who was also a model. She had a chance to participate in shoots with her mum and it was such a great experience as she recalls. Years later, in 2017, she re-entered modeling by doing some shoots in her spare time. It was a hobby and something nice to do at the time. On the other hand, it was also an escape and way of coping with difficult feelings. 'I was bullied for most of my early life, at school and at home'. Comfortanna disclosed that these events impacted her sense of confidence and modeling was a way to get it back. She told Habibi Magazine 'modeling was my safe space that allowed me to bring alive this hidden side of me that was buried, and I loved how I’d switch up my mood when the camera was pointed in my direction'. Modeling helped her to come out of her shell and have a sense of worth.
'Changing Seasons'
This particular shoot was inspired by a natural change of seasons and earthy colors. Changes in seasons is how mother earth transforms its face. 'makes me think of changes in mood' - she said.. 'One day you might feel sad and down but no matter how hopeless you feel the mood as the season naturally changes'. Therefore, as Comfort told us, the change of seasons is something good, it is a gift from earth. 'I was approached by a photographer, Barbra, with the concept of change and transformation'. Barbra suggested the concept of earth and seasons signifying a turn in our lives and I immediately identified with this idea'' - Comfort told Habibi Magazine. The idea reminded Comfort of a natural progress of the mood in her life: no matter how dark it becomes the sun always rises. Comfort together with the photographer Barbra went ahead and worked on the concept. The success of the amazing pictures you can see in here is the fusion of collaboration on the concept and rapport they built: 'we understood each other'. Looking back, Comfort reflected on how much the understanding feeds into the great shoot. 'I guess it is like any other relationship - it only works if you understand each other' - she smiled.
Challenges
Comfortanna usually prepares for her shoots by doing the research. It helps her to internalize the mood and what the photographer’s expectations are. She is keen on adding her own ideas to the creation of the photoshoot. The final outcome is a blend of the vision of a person in front and behind the camera. ‘I think people often do not realize that there is more to the picture than just standing in front of the camera - it is about the mood, intention and the person who can capture all that at the right time’. ‘Client’s expectations are vital’ - she said. Comfortanna is fully committed to what the client needs. For the ‘Changing Seasons’ shoot, the photographer was interested in her natural look. She decided to wash her hair a day before and braid it at home. She had no make-up and left her hair naturally flowing. The natural, soft curls and no-makeup look perfectly with the concept of the shoot. ‘Lastly, how you treat yourself before the shoot matters’. Comfortanna has a very professional approach to her career. She told us that before the shoot she likes to relax and spend some time on activities she enjoys. That ensures that on the shoot she looks fresh and well-rested. ‘A good picture is not only what you do on the day but what you do the night before’ - she said. Comfortanna believes that a good night's sleep and a dose of happiness helps to prepare her for the shoot.
When it comes to a dress she was not able to get any earthy tones from her wardrobe so she was offered a dress by the photographer. ‘What I like about fashion is that you try to recreate someone’s vision - it might not be yours but for the few minutes when you are on shoot you are someone else - you are what the photographer or the client wants you to be’. Barbra’s vision was ‘simple… nothing too extravagant’ and she delivered. The most difficult part of the shoot was to get the natural lighting. The day was cloudy and the sun was coming from in between the clouds sporadically. They decided to wait for a long period of time to get the perfect natural lighting that they wanted rather than using artificial light. All in line with the concept of ‘Changing Seasons’. Comfortanna also told us she doesn’t use any specific photographers when she is making her portfolio but she tries to work with projects that are similar to her goals and vision for herself. She focuses on representing different looks and moods but the understanding between her and a photographer is such an important aspect of the shoot.
We wish Comfortanna all the best in her future endeavors and thank you for the time she took with Habibi London Magazine.

One of the most recognizable handbags is Lady Dior. First ever Lady Dior handbag came out in 1994 under the Creative Director Gianfranco Ferré. The bag was given as a gift to Princess Diana in 1995 by Bernadette Chirac, then-First lady of France. Since then Princess Diana ordered the bag in other colours and was often seen carrying them.
Lady Dior is made of soft lambskin with the main motif of cannage. It comes in four sizes. Each has a strap which means it can be worn as a cross body bag. Nonetheless due to its A-line shape it is not very practical to wear it as a cross body bag. Despite this limiting feature it does not decrease its popularity.
The handbag was originally made as a carry-on handbag with its rigid handles. One disadvantage is that they don't stay up but fall down and make some noise. I am sure all of you who tried to make a nice picture of your Lady Dior know what I am talking about. There is a trick to keep the handles in place. Just pull each of two handles to the side and move them downwards to the corner.
There is a great attention to detail with each Lady Dior. The thread is exactly the same colour as the colour of the bag. Each bag also has a date engraved inside and lovely D I O R charms. Earlier edition of the bag came with a zipper which was then removed by an internal flap. A zipper made it slightly more tricky to reach the stuff at the bottom of the bag especially when the bag is packed. Internal flap appeared to make it easier. Again, it seems that whether it is a zipper or flap the bag has not lost popularity.
All Dior bags include a leather tag inside the bag that contains a heat stamp. This tag should have a rectangular shape and rounded corners. On the front side of this tag, you will find the logo stamp. Depending on the model of the bag, the logo stamp should have two or three lines. You will find the words “Christian Dior” with “PARIS” in capital letters a bit below. For some purses, “MADE IN ITALY” or “MADE IN SPAIN”. On the backside of this tag, you will find the date code. It is unsure when Dior started incorporating date codes on the tags, but various blogs mention the fashion house started using them around 1997. In the date code, the last 4 digits indicate the month and the year when the bag was made. The first and third numbers indicate the month of manufacturing, the second and fourth numbers indicate the year. For instance, 16-BO-0133 means the bag was made in March 2013. If the bag has a code like RU 0928, the bag was made in February 1998.
Lady Dior was not always Lady Dior. At first named 'favourite' was then renamed Lady Dior after Lady Diana. Apparently, with Lady Diana's permission. The handbag was not only 'favourite' but Lady Diana's favourite. There was no better marketing Lady Dior handbag could have had. Considering its great qualities there is no surprise Lady Diana loved it. Not taking away from the bag's features, the obvious adoration by the Duchess surely helped.
]]>Jacquard was created by a French weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard who invented this technology in 1804. Complex patterns were woven directly into the fabric. Although Jacquard has its name from the inventor of the loom, some credit should also be given to earlier inventors who used a variety of machines that made the process of weaving complex patterns into fabric easier. The invention of jacquard loom mean that priced of jacquard reduced and it was no longer a fabric for the elite. Before the invention of the jacquard loom, such patterns were made by hand and involved a lot of time and labor.
Since jacquard is a type of weave rather than fabric it means it be made of any fibers, care instructions depend a lot on the fabric the clothing is made of. Some of jacquards are ok with washing, while others prefer dry-cleaning. If jacquard is rich with metallic yarn, sequins or beadwork, dry-cleaning is the best option. Sturdy jacquard can be machine washed at 30 degrees. For the details always refer to the label. Do not wring jacquard but let it dry on a hanger or flat. If you choose to press jacquard, it is generally recommended to do it on the wrong side not to damage the pattern.
The important advantage is that jacquard can consist of a mix of elastic fibers such as spandex or lycra mixed with less elastic fibers such as cotton. More stretchy fabrics can be used for fitted styles. Jessica Alba wore a jacquard pegged dress designed by Mary Katrantzou at the Helping Hand of Los Angeles Mother's Day. Heavier fabric is perfect for a dress with a fitted bodice that comes in at the waist and then flares out to a ball-like gown. Jacquard fabrics made of lightweight materials are often used for summer apparel. House designers incorporate their well-known patterns into the fabric creating jacquard. Balmain celebrated 75th anniversary of the house by creating jacquard presenting its famous well-recognized labyrinth pattern wore by Kim Kardashian.
Lastly, what is the future of jacquard? Google has come up with an exciting idea of smart apparel, footwear and other essentials. Can you envision not to have your mobile stuck in your pocket but use the pocket itself to receive a phone call? Perhaps not yet, but beginnings are promising. Jacquard by Google allows to woven technology directly into the fabric. Google promotes its jacket with 'a smart strap'. You can receive a phone call by brushing the strap of your backpack or the cuff of your jacket. It has not taken long from creation of the efficient loom by Joseph-Marie Jacquard to smart software woven directly into the clothes.
]]>In the expectations to see most spectacular gowns of the Met Gala 2021 I have been reminiscing of the past events. Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute event always brings wonderful gowns designed by the most significant designers and fashion houses in the industry such as Balmain, Balenciaga, Chanel and others. As I was going through the pictures there was one gown that caught my attention. Designed by Versace Atelier, ruby gown that was completed with detailed embroidery, jewel-encrusted bodice and a long embroided train carried by three handlers. Custom-made by Atelier Versace dress took more than 600 hours to make and cost 2 million dollars. Ornate ruby and gold design features some of the extensive and intricate beading. The gown that make every woman feel royal and certainly made the actress who wore it, Blake Lively, feel amazing. Blake told Vogue that it was her favourite dress ever. That becomes apparent looking through Blake's Instagram post with our favourite one - 'When the carpet matches the Blakes' posted on 5th of May 2020. Was it a coincidence? we will surely watch this year's Met Gala to find out.
The stunning gown featured emeralds and rubies sawn with gold thread embodied the Met Gala's theme for 2018 "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". The Greek adjective katholikos, the origin of the term catholic, means 'universal'; but there was nothing universal about the Versace crimson dress. Blake Lively was as ornate as a Catholic Cathedral with her masterpiece and jewels worth 2 million dollars.
A woman's gown is not completed without matching heels and clutch. The astonishing gown was completed by red high heels designed by Louboutin. Blake appeared at the gala with Christian Louboutin himself by her side. The red heels designed with teal, red, purple jewels and golden, silver beads. I personally loved the purple jewel in a shape of wallflower carefully placed on the strap of the sandal.
The look could not have been complete without a custom-made emerald and diamond earrings was made by Lorraine Schwartz and a custom handbag by Judith Leiber. A lovely clutch emblazoned with a medieval-style family crest featured Lively's initial, and the initials of Reynolds and their two children, James and Ines. The letters B, R, J, and I thrust out of a huge diamond in the middle like a cross, and the background features an intricate scroll with their family surname 'Reynolds'.
The next Met Gala that is planned for September 2021 will have a theme 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. How will the most exquisite gala gown look like and who will wear it?

1. Check the label to see if the clothing is washer friendly. Most cotton or cotton-blend hoodies are machine washable. Wool, however, is not as tough as cotton and the fabric will get damaged in a washing machine and ruin the hoodie. If your hoodie is made of wool, you’ll need to take it to the dry cleaners.

In 1919, in Rochester NY, Simon Feinbloom and his two sons Bill and Abe started the company that is credited with rise of a hoodie from practical to popular. The Knickerbocker Knitting Company (today known as 'Champion') initially produced protective wool underwear for warehouse workers to protect them from cold, thus at the time hooded sweatshirts were associated with labour.
University of Michigan noticed the durability of Knickerbocker’s apparel and invited the company to make sweatshirts for its numerous sports teams. This was the brothers’ first major success. The brand was suddenly involved in the first major push to regulate sports team uniforms.
The sweatshirts spread to a large scale outside university campuses and training grounds and were slowly adopted by the non-athletes on college campuses. Champion set to work, ultimately producing the now-famous “reverse-weave” sweatshirts. Reverse-weave knits are made of a heavy-duty cotton fleece and are cut on the cross-grain, a deceptively simple way to prevent vertical shrinkage. Elasticated cuffs and waists were added to crew-necks to retain precious body-heat.
In 1930 Knickerboxer was renamed as Champion Knitting Mills and in the 40s started supplying athletic apparel and T-shirts to US troops. There were adopted after World War II as practical clothes for training.
Like in many other garments, the popularity of hoodie was strengthen by celebrities. Muhammad Ali was spotted wearing a white hoodie before his historical fight at London Wembley Stadium in 1963.
Sweatshirts, specifically hoodies were suddenly associated with a brand-new genre of superstar: the Hip-hop artist. The revolutionary new wave of music that began in New York would become inextricably tied to the hoodie.
From about 2015 hoodies started entering the world of high fashion. In Habibi London we want to showcase this unique garment's biggest advantages: practicability and style.
